Dandenong Thunder has on Saturday confirmed that Rodrigo Vargas is the next player to sign on at George Andrews Reserve.

The deal will see the former two-time A-League winning centre-back stay at the club for at least one season.

Vargas makes the move south after not being offered a contract extension at Green Gully for 2017.

He will bring with him a wealth of experience garnered throughout his six-year stint with Melbourne Victory and the state’s top tier over a career spanning over 20 years.

Thunder’s new man was a key cog in Green Gully’s FFA Cup success earlier this year, which saw Arthur Papas’ side reach the final eight of the competition after famously knocking out A-League outfit, Central Coast Mariners in the Round of 32.

Thunder staff Nait Ragipi believes Vargas’s signing will help balance the squad.

“We’re delighted with the signing,” he told MFootball.

“He has a lot to offer & brings more quality and experience into the team.

“We had a successful formula with a mix of experience and youth last season and it worked well for us, we will emulate that again this season. It’s a win for everybody.”

The 38-year-old becomes the second player to cross over to Dandenong from Green Gully this off-season, joining fellow teammate Alon Blumgart.

Vargas will link up with fellow players, Simon Colosimo, Nick Modaffari, Fraser Maclaren and Brandon Barnes, who have each resigned at the club.

The news comes only days after the 2012 treble winning club announced the capturing of Italian boss Giuseppe Anastasi.

The Italian is expected to join his new team within the coming fortnight.
