van’t Schip unfazed by leaky Wanderers defence

Melbourne City will look to keep pressure on league leader Sydney FC tonight, as it takes on Western Sydney Wanderers at Spotless Stadium.

When these two sides last met in the A-League it was a seven goal thriller which went the way of the Wanderers. Given Western Sydney’s current defensive record, it could be a similarly high-scoring encounter tonight.

“I assume they’re working to get those things right,” City coach John van’t Schip said.

“For us it’s just focus on our own game. We want to play in a certain way… we just have to make sure we’re prepared, concentrated and make sure we close them down and play our own game.”

Two players under scrutiny at Wanderers are both former City players in Andrew Redmayne and Jack Clisby, but although he has coached both of them, van’t Schip would not comment on either individual.

“I’m not going to talk about players of the other team,” he said.

“I can talk about a team in general but I don’t think it’s for me to talk about players of other teams.”

Luke Brattan is available since returning from international duty, where the Socceroos had a disappointing trip to Thailand in its latest World Cup Qualifier.

“He’s in. He’s just arrived so he’s training with us this morning and it’s good to have him back.”

“I’m happy for Luke that he was involved and I think that’s the first step. They didn’t get the performance that they wanted and I think if Luke just keeps on playing good football and performing then in the future he’ll get another opportunity.”
